16U Ruffnecks Hardened by Experience – Bolstered by Additions

TEAM ROSTER | TEAM SCHEDULE

The 16u Ruffnecks season is defined by a schedule that is similar to that of the 17u Squad.  Indeed, both teams are in many of the same events.  We believe that our 16u players, most with significant varsity HS experience, should play the most challenging schedule possible. The 16u schedule finds the 16u (primarily rising juniors), often traveling with the 17u Ruffnecks for much of the summer.  Trips to Georgia and Nashville are on the late June calendar.  Both teams travel to Ohio at the end of July and into the first week of August at the Tournament of Champions.  Similarly, the teams play in the same events in our region.  The 16’s will attend the Firecracker July Fourth Showcase Tournament and compete in the 17u Division.

The objectives are to expose players to college recruiters in premier events, to provide competitive challenges, and to continue the teaching and development that comes with playing sound, TEAM-oriented baseball.  This means that players are asked to be unselfish in competition.  “Exposure ” and development are differentiated from “Showcasing.”  We believe we put our players in the best possible situations to maximize exposure while continuing to learn the game from highly qualified coaching.  Our Coaching Staff is manned by 3 to 4 coaches consistently.  Brendan Casey (Head Coach at WPI) is the skipper.  His father, legendary Tufts Coach John Casey, manages the pitching and provides experience and wisdom.  Mike Lyon joins the 16’s in mid-summer following his efforts with the 14u Ruffnecks.  And Associate Director, Ted Novio (Head Coach Wellesley HS) complements the 16u staff.

Pre-Season and Scout Day

The 16U experience begins in early June with “Pre-Season” training the week of June 3rd at the NEBC.  These sessions are designed to be daily workouts to include batting practice, skill work, and to assess and recharge pitching arms for the busy summer.  The Pre-Season culminates with a SCOUT DAY on Wednesday, June 12.  Pre-Season workouts create an opportunity for players who have finished their spring seasons to recalibrate and get preparatory work done with instructive supervision.  The primary objective is development and preparation.  The 16U Ruffnecks travel June 19th to the PBR 16U National Championships in Emerson, Georgia to open the 2024 season in earnest. The squad finishes at the Tournament of Champions in Cincinnati, Ohio July 31-August 4.
